Editing stats in PrestoStats Basketball

When editing stats here are a few notes you should be aware of:

  • PrestoStats can only be used to edit a PAK stats file. If an XML file was uploaded to generate the box score, then you can’t use PrestoStats to edit that file. An error message will appear describing this limitation and will ask if you will want to proceed by deleting the XML file and starting the game over. In this scenario, you should be reaching out to the institution that inputted the stats, ask them to make the edits on their end, and then send you an updated XML file to upload to the event or have them upload an updated XML file if they have access.

  • Depending on the number of edits you need to make to the game it actually may be easier to revert the box score to the version before where the edits need to be made, and then re-input the stats from there.

  • These instructions can be used for making edits while the game is in progress or after the game has been completed.

  • When making edits you should check to make sure the changes are being saved and are syncing to the network by looking for the green check mark and timestamp in upper left corner of PrestoStats:

Inserting a play

If a play was missed during the game, you can insert a play into the game by following these instructions to place it in the correct spot in the play by play

  1. From the play input screen go under Recent Plays and click Full Play By Play

  2. Click the half/quarter tabs at the top to navigate between halves/quarters and to select the half/quarter where the play occurred

  3. Click Insert Play at the bottom of the page. Click Yes to confirm inserting the play.

  4. Input the play and make sure to put the correct time in the Time field in the Submit Play screen. Click Save to save the play. Note for missed shots the program will sometimes put the rebound before the shot instead of after the shot in the play by play. To correct this, edit the rebound play to a different time than the shot, then edit it again and change it to the same time as the shot.

Editing participation

  1. From the play input screen click on Rosters

  2. Select the team and click Set Starters and Participation

  3. Uncheck the box under Participation to remove a player as a participating in the game. For basketball it will let you do this even if the player was inputted in plays during the game, however it will still list them in the box score with their stats.

  4. If that’s the case, the only way to remove them as participating in the game is if you edit the plays they were involved in and credit the stats to other players. Once you have removed them from those plays, you will still have to go back to Set Starters and Participation and uncheck the box to mark them as not participating if you didn’t do so before.

  5. Check the box next to a player to mark them as participating in the game. You can also edit plays they should have been credited with a stat and that will mark them as participating in the game.

  6. Click Save

Balancing stats

In basketball you have the ability to manually balance certain statistics, specifically minutes and rebounds. If these statistics aren’t balanced, then this can cause issues with tabulating statistics for the game and when exporting the files. These statistics aren’t considered balanced if the total minutes assigned to players don’t match the total minutes played in the game and if the total rebounds don’t match the total amount of missed shots.

Balancing minutes

  1. From the play input screen click on Game Ctrl

  2. Click on Balance Stats

  3. Click Balance Minutes

  4. A window will pop up showing the total minutes in each period along with expected minutes played

  5. If you click Edit, it will take you to the edit substitutions screen where you can edit substitutions to adjust the minutes played

  6. You can also manually adjust the minutes played by clicking Manually Override Minutes. If choose this option the program will stop counting minutes automatically based on the timestamp for substitutions in the game and will have to be manually managed going forward

  7. Adjust players’ minutes for both teams as needed to to adjust each half/quarter to the correct number of minutes

  8. Click Save

Video instructions:

Balancing rebounds

  1. From the play input screen click on Game Ctrl

  2. Click on Balance Stats

  3. Click Balance Rebounds

  4. If the number of rebounds is balanced then a message will pop up that says “Rebounds are balanced”. If they aren’t balanced, a window will pop up showing the number of total rebounds and missed shots.

  5. If you click Edit it will take you to the play by play to, where you can edit plays to remove the extra rebounds or add missing rebounds

  6. You can also view the play by play by clicking on Reports and then click Full Game. On this page you can use the search feature in your browser to search for either the word “missed” to check to make sure each missed shot and free throw has a corresponding rebound. To find extra rebounds search for the word “rebound” to check to make sure each rebound has a corresponding missed shot or free throw with it

  7. You can look through the play by play to confirm that each missed shot and free throw only has one rebound associated with it, or to make sure a rebound wasn’t missing on a missed shot or free throw. For extra rebounds you should delete that play and for missing ones you will need to insert the rebound in that spot in the play by play.

  8. If you can’t find extra/missing rebounds on any of those play types, then check for extra team rebounds added in the game. It’s possible that one of those types of rebound was incorrectly added, so you can remove one of them to balance the rebounds. If you can’t find any missing rebounds, you may just need to add a team rebound somewhere in the play by play to balance them.

  9. Once you have removed the extra rebounds or added the missing rebounds, go back to Balance Rebounds to check to make sure the rebounds are now balanced.
